Today I pitched my unit 8. I feel it went well due to me being very confident with my idea, and clear on where I'm going with it. I'm going to take on board the feedback I received, especially the feedback regarding my schedule. I'm going reconsider taking my photographs over two days, and try to get them all done in one day.
I have decided that for my FMP, I am going to be creating two printed advertisements to raise awareness of domestic abuse. The reason I decided on this as opposed to the single photograph or the photography series is because I personally feel that a printed advert would have a greater impact on the audience. Depending on how I decide to approach the ad (be it from the victim/outsider/abuser's points of view) I could use juxtapositions to make the audience feel uncomfortable, or I could go for some photo manipulation which shocks the audience. I also decided on this idea, as for me, it is more financially achievable, as I won't have to send away for prints of the photographs. I can print the advertisements out with a standard printer and laminate them. I'll also be able to post them onto social media to get them more attention.
After doing some research into printed ads, I have found that the most effective ones are the ones which make the audience feel uncomfortable or shocked, as when they're feeling like this, they will be more inclined to take action. When I viewed some ads, such as the homeless ad featured in my research blog, it made me feel uncomfortable and look into ways to help the homeless. I'm really excited to see where I can go with this project and what result I will get. My main outcome for this project would to be to create a really successful advertisement which has a strong impact on the viewer. It would also be amazing if a domestic abuse charity of some sorts would like to use my advertisement, however I'm not sure this will be possible- it just depends on how well I do! After thinking about my initial ideas, I have narrowed down to the following ideas:
Photo series: I want to have the photographs as physical layers like you get in Photoshop. The reasoning for this is because domestic abuse isn't always just what you see on the surface. Victims of domestic abuse are often very frightened and conceal their abuse from the outside world, be it by putting on a happy personality, or physically concealing bruises and such with makeup.
Single portrait photograph: For this to be as effective as possible, I'll need to play on the audiences emotions by making the model in my photograph hold as much emotion as possible. If I went for the single photograph of the victim, I'd have them look frightened and disheveled with wide tear-filled eyes, and cowering away from the camera. If I went with the single portrait of the abuser I'd have them up close and personal with the camera. I'd have them with the emotion rage, and light it so that every crease on their face is in shadow. I want the photo to look extremely menacing.
Idea change due to research: As I was doing some research into domestic abuse, I came across some printed advertisements for domestic abuse. These adverts combined photography with information so that it is clear what the advert is trying to put across. Some of them didn't even have any written information, but had been manipulated so that it was easy for the audience to understand what the ad was trying to say. I looked at a range of printed advertisements for different campaigns and products and found that many of them either use juxtapositions or striking images to shock the audience. I think that this would be a really good idea to do, as it would be achievable on my own, but also really challenging as there would be a lot of work on Photoshop. Printed advertisement: If I were to create a printed advertisement I would approach it in a similar way to the photography projects and have the advertisement (s) feature either the victim or abuser. I'd have to come up with an effective juxtaposition, or think of a snappy tag line with a striking photograph to go with it.
Here is my mind map I made to show my idea topics and where I can go with them Currently I'm really liking the idea of doing either a photography project or a short film on domestic abuse. I have listed the good points and the bad points of both below: Photography Project
Short Film
For my final major project I'd really love to do something based around domestic abuse, as for a previous project I did a bit of research into domestic abuse and found a truly shocking fact that 4,000 women die every year as a result of domestic abuse- be this from suicide or murder. I feel very passionate about this topic, and would love to be able to create a project to help raise awareness for this.
Something else I'd like to look into would be body image, and the pressures on young women and girls. This is a topic very close to my heart and if I went down this line I'd want to create a very positive video to help promote young women being confident in their own skin. This is something I've struggled with for years and I think it would be interesting to find out how other girls my age feel. My main aim/outcome is to create something which has a big impact on the viewer and changes their perception on something, be this domestic abuse or body image. |
